“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”― J.R.R. Tolkien

You get in the car and set off towards home. You’ve been listening to the same station for hours, and there are still many hours more to go. You can’t help but wonder, Is there something better I could be doing with my time?

The answer is: absolutely.

How To Make the Most Out of a Long Drive

Podcasts

Podcasts such as Radiolab and Stuff You Should Know both aim to teach you something and keep you engaged, while others like Getting Things Done teaches a productivity method (GTD) that redefines how you approach life and work.

Audio Books

While Audible is great for more popular reads, Hoopla lets you login with your library card and gives you access to an entire collection of audiobooks. If you’re looking for something free, LibriVox is voiced by volunteer readers across the globe and has a broad range of public domain reads.

Speeches

Looking to learn a little history? The HISTORY channel has a wide variety of famous speeches you can listen to for free.

Learn Something New

When you’re stuck in the car, there is no better time to learn something new. This includes: learning a new language, listening to class lectures, or playing an audio documentary.

More Importantly, Be Safe

While it’s great to pursue personal growth in your downtime, what’s important is that you do it safely. Buckle up, prepare all of you entertainment beforehand or while your stopped, and always keep both hands on the wheel.

Happy holidays!
