If you’ve been to a museum and looked at paintings from a hundred years ago, you’ve seen how our creative work can transcend time and reach people from around the world. Hobbies are usually not masterpieces, but the gratification and self-expression they bring can forge unimaginable pathways in life. Whether you enjoy knitting sweaters for yourself or playing frisbee with friends, it’s a self-portrait — one that leaves an impression on those around you.

Unfortunately, most people begin a hobby, slowly become uninterested, then turn to the next big thing. While this may seem innocent enough, it’s often part of an unhealthy cycle that creeps into other aspects of their lives — like the urge to take a bite of every dish without finishing a single one.

Why do people drop hobbies?

  • Burnout
  • Hard time focusing
  • Perfectionism
  • FOMO

In my experience, perfectionism and FOMO (fear of missing out) are notorious hobby killers. If I want to learn Spanish, I feel guilty that I’m not writing. If I’m writing and a project feels overwhelming, the excuses pour in. Suddenly, picking up my laptop seems like an impossible task, and it’s easier to push my worries…
