How to Fall In Love With Your City
No one gets to choose where they are born, but you often get to decide where you want to go. Whether it is an hour away from the beach or a short subway ride to the biggest city in America — you are free to go wherever your pockets can afford.
The question is: how do you become part of your city and stop feeling like an outsider?
The Problem
You move to a new city. You have your apartment set up just the way you would like, your job starts tomorrow, and life seems to be on the right track. As time goes on, you become more and more isolated and start to feel like an outsider in your own city. Even if you wanted to change, you don’t know where to start.
The Solution
Moving to a new city is like starting a video game, where you’re still trying to get the hang of the controls: you need time to warm up and get through the tutorial. You may die to the first boss a few times — that’s okay! It’s all part of the experience.
“You take delight not in a city’s seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to a question of yours.”― Italo Calvino
