Self-sabotage is the arch nemesis of our dreams — constantly waiting for the opportunity to stomp all over them and crush our motivation. You stop exercising, let your guitar gather dust, or neglect a side hustle that used to fill you with energy. Before you know it, you can’t think about the goal that you dropped without being overrun with guilt.

You’re not alone. Many people, myself included, have played tug-o-war with self-sabotage for years. We call it The Cycle.

Before we jump in, let’s take a look at what self-sabotage means and important signs to look out for.

The Signs

According to BetterUp, “…self-sabotage is when people do (or don’t do) things that block their success or prevent them from accomplishing their goals.” Meaning that our thoughts can be sitting on the opposite side of the bleachers and cheering for the wrong team.
